Your essay on this topic is very enlightening. I personally can think of one simple reason I don't take my laptop to face to face meetings at work, that is the scarcity of network connections in the meeting rooms. If I were presenting I would be concerned if all I saw of the participants was the tops of their heads. I want to know that I have their attention. I would therefore propose a point of etiquette that should you bring a laptop to a meeting to take notes that it not be placed directly in front of you, or, that you look down at the screen as little as possible (those of us who learned to type by touch should be able to accomplish this.)
